They utilize high-energy rare-earth or ceramic magnets that are engaged and disengaged manually via a mechanical lever, making them ideal for remote locations or facilities where power cords would pose a safety hazard.
Can these magnets be used to lift round steel pipes or just flat plates?
Many Mag-Mate models, such as the PowerLift® and DynamicLift™ series, feature a “V” pole shoe design on the bottom that allows them to securely grip both flat surfaces and round stock like pipes or bars. However, it is important to note that the Working Load Limit (WLL) is typically reduced when lifting round materials compared to flat plates, so always consult the specific capacity chart for your model.
What happens to the magnetic grip if the temperature of the steel is very high?
Standard Mag-Mate lifting magnets are typically rated for temperatures up to 180°F (82°C). If the material being lifted exceeds this temperature, the magnet can begin to lose its lifting capacity, and extreme heat may even cause permanent demagnetization of the unit. For high-heat applications, specialized series like the Creative Lift® are recommended as they are engineered to withstand higher thermal thresholds.
Is it possible to accidentally release the load while it is in the air?
Mag-Mate lifters are designed with critical safety mechanisms, such as locking handles and safety latches, to prevent accidental deactivation. On models like the AdvantageLift™, the lifting bail itself mechanically locks the handle in the “ON” position as soon as tension is applied, ensuring the magnet cannot be switched off until the load is safely placed back on the ground and the tension is released.
Does the thickness of the steel plate affect how much the magnet can lift?
Yes, steel thickness is a primary factor in magnetic lifting; if the steel is too thin, it cannot absorb all the magnetic flux, which significantly reduces the holding force. Maximum lifting capacity is usually rated based on a minimum thickness (often 1 inch or greater of mild steel), and using the magnet on thinner sheets will result in a lower safe working load than the maximum rating printed on the tool.
